Open Appeal to ANZ, Standard Bank and BNP Paribas:
Stay away from the Toka Tindung gold mine on Sulawesi!

24 February 2010

We, the undersigned organisations, herewith express our deepest concern about the apparent interest of BNP Paribas, ANZ and Standard Bank to financially support the development of the gold mining operation Toka Tindung on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The mine is owned by subsidiaries of Archipelago Resources; PT Meares Soputan Mining (MSM) and PT Tambang Tondano Nusajaya (TTN). Given the history of this project we are appalled that banks of such international standing seriously consider entering this project. ... read more

Indonesia: The government must reign in on increasing violence and restrictions of free expression

February 2010

Aide-Mémoire
13th UN Human Rights Council
1st to 26th March 2010

After last year’s by and large peaceful general elections, Indonesia is internationally accepted as a democratic country that upholds fundamental human rights. Within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Indonesia tries to position itself as a regional vanguard of human rights protection, as last witnessed by its role in the creation of an ASEAN human rights body. However, Indonesia’s domestic human rights record continues to be a cause of ... read more
