Open Appeal to ANZ, Standard Bank and BNP Paribas:
Stay away from the Toka Tindung gold mine on Sulawesi!

24 February 2010

We, the undersigned organisations, herewith express our deepest concern about the apparent interest of BNP Paribas, ANZ and Standard Bank to financially support the development of the gold mining operation Toka Tindung on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The mine is owned by subsidiaries of Archipelago Resources; PT Meares Soputan Mining (MSM) and PT Tambang Tondano Nusajaya (TTN). Given the history of this project we are appalled that banks of such international standing seriously consider entering this project. ... read more

Lapindo mud volcano in Sidoardjo

Lapindo mud volcano in Sidoardjo

Suara No. 1/09, August 2009

by Marianne Klute

Translated into English by biofuelwatch, September 2009

The scale of the catastrophe becomes apparent only from the air: A layer of mud has covered sixteen villages, schools, rice paddies, even the motorway to Surabaya. More than 50,000 people who lived here until three years ago have lost everything. People continue to survive in tents. They see themselves as victims of Indonesia’s biggest environmental scandal.

End of May 2006: Lapindo Brantas, a company which ... read more

The Bakrie Group

Suara No. 1/09, August 2009

by Marianne Klute

Translated into English by biofuelwatch, September 2009

The Bakrie case offers an interesting insight into the intertwining of politics and business in Indonesia, a lesson to be learned about business practices in Indonesia, based on the exploitation of Indonesia’s valuable resources for the benefit of individuals and the lack of will to build a consolidated and responsible economy, and, last not least, provides data on the involvement of international capital in ... read more

German Bank Pulls Out of Controversial Indonesian Gold Mine Scheme

18th January 2008

Urgewald + Watch Indonesia!, press note

The Indonesian province of North Sulawesi is a biodiversity hotspot and harbors some of the world’s most spectacular nature areas. Northern Sulawesi is also home to a series of gold deposits, the largest of which is known by the name of Toka Tindung. Plans to establish gold mining operations here have met with widespread resistance both from local inhabitants and the Provincial government, who fear that the mines would disrupt ... read more

Oil palm plantations? Carbon credits? Papua’s forests targeted

Oil palm plantations? Carbon credits? Papua’s forests targeted

Down to Earth, November 2007

West Papua / forests:

Large areas of Papua’s rich and diverse forests are being targeted by Indonesian and overseas investors for conversion into oil palm plantations. At the same time, discussions are in progress to reserve large areas of Papua’s forest to generate carbon credits for trade on international markets. Decisions about these developments will very probably be made over the heads of the people who will be most directly affected by them: the indigenous ... read more

What Future for Papua?

What Future for Papua?

April 2007

Alex Flor, Marianne Klute, Petra Stockmann

The Helsinki agreement of 2005 marks the historic peace process for Indonesia’s westernmost province Aceh. After three decades of violence and repression, the long self determination conflict is in the process of being resolved. Both the Free Aceh Movement and the Indonesian government have made substantial concessions for this to happen. However, for the second most burning and long lasting self-determination conflict, concerning Indonesia’s easternmost region Papua, formerly ... read more
