For more than 50 years there has been political unrest in West Papua. Triggered by racial discrimination and attacks on Papuan students in several Javanese cities the conflict reached a new level of escalation in mid-August 2019, entailing severe state repression and horizontal conflicts.
They are the worst escalations of violence in West Papua since the fall of the military dictatorship under President Suharto. Long-lasting tensions between indigenous Papuans and Indonesian migrants manifested themselves in outbreaks of horizontal violence against certain ethnic groups, leading to deaths among non-indigenous and indigenous peoples.


Dr Yoteni is a peace activist and lecturer at the STT Kijne Theological College in Jayapura, Papua. She observes the increasing number of cases of religious conflict in West Papua and is an international advocate for the rights of Papuans.
